Nutritional Databases

The food databases used by Food Smart form the core of our software - nutritional analysis of recipes, menus and personal intake records would not be possible without having a solid set of food items to reference.

We are committed to integrating the latest updates made to the US and Canadian national food databases.

Food Smart 6.0 includes updated nutrition information from the following two sources:

USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 18

Download the USDA SR 18 Database  USDA SR18 Source

Each year the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory issues an updated database of food nutrient composition of foods commonly used in the United States.

    Canadian Nutrient File 2005

Download the CNF 2005 Database  Canadian Nutrient File 2005

Its been almost 4 years since Health Canada last released an update to the Canadian Nutrient File, and so we're very excited to announce the integration of the new CNF 2005 database into Food Smart 6.0.

This represents a very important step forward, improving the accuracy and completeness of the nutrient content provided by the Canadian editions of Food Smart.

Helpful Hints

Here are some suggestions related to food item management in Food Smart:

You can add as many custom food items as you like - just open the Food Item Selection window

and click on the New button.

Searching for food items can be time consuming - use our common description option to quickly

locate those foods you use most often.  We've chosen common descriptions already for most food

items, but you are welcome to customize this to your own preferences.

When adding new commercially available food items, make sure to check out the product

packaging for nutrient values.  You can also request nutritional information from most food

manufacturers - check out their web site or call their toll-free customer service and get the most up-

to-date nutrient information for those food products you use most often.
